Retro / Semi-Modern / Modern Arcade
I would like this morning to share with you what i am doing in order to play different types of arcade games.
Retro Arcade: I play on a Sega New Astro City cabinet refurbished (paint, capkit, power supply refurbish, stockers, kick harness,…).
- First i played with PCB cards bought on ebay, CPS1, CPS2,… to have the « real » retro gaming experience like 30 years ago, but honestly, to have to change the PCB each time i have to change game was boring at the end.
- Then, i have put a SNK NeoGeo MVS slot in the cabinet plugged on the Jamma interface. with a 161-in-one cartridge not to have to open the cabinet to change the games.
- Then i made a PC 15 KHz with an ATI Radeon graphic card on a former Dell optiplex computer. I installed the graphic drivers and HFSBox and Fightcade to play online. Only issue was to be able to put the computer in the cabinet, then i has to power wire out of the cabinet… also all the wires to go from the PC to the JammaSD card arelong…
- Finally, in order to play different systems like Namca, Capcom, SNK,… i decided to go to emulation: i have bought a Recalbox RGB Jamma with a Raspberry Pi 5 and downloaded the Retroninjasamurai image with Recalbox and all retro arcade roms on it (see former articles). Network game is really good, as much as Fighcade.
Semi-Modern Arcade (NesicaLive, Taito X, Sega ringedge,…): i play on a chinese chewlix
- First i played on a NUC computer with Windows 10, i installed Teknoparrot (see other article) and the roms on a NAS. Then installed Retrobat to have a frontend to laucnh teknoparrot (to avoid keyboard and mouse). Very good stuff.
- An alternative (and i switch from the 2 ones), is to install Batocera. I have 2 SSD slots on my NUC, so i installed the RGS Batocera image on the second SSD. Then i installed the arcade packs such as NesicaLive, RIngedge,… finally the less complex to install and to use, but missing some good stuff only available on Teknopaarot.
Modern Arcade (Tekken 8, Gundam Breaker,…): i play also on my chinese Chewlix
- Today, i have a gamer NUC with windows 10 and steam on it.
- I never did it, but you can also put a PS4, PS5, Switch instead of the computer. Easy way to play on the last AAA arcade games on the cabinet.
